Q: How is Shylock presented as a complex character in The Merchant of Venice?

 

P: Shylock is shown as more than just a villain – he is hurt and angry because of how he is treated.
 

Q: “He hath disgraced me… and what’s his reason? I am a Jew.”
 

E: This shows how badly Shylock has been treated by others, just because of his religion. It helps the audience feel some sympathy for him.
